Just for the record - I'm Scottish but I can't stand Franz Ferdinand!

I'm sorry, but these guys haven't even made one good song - a fairly decent riff in their first single but the rest of their first album is derivative crap. The Mercury Music prize is meant to reward innovative music. Belle & Sebastian or Snow Patrol are just so much more innovative and original than that bunch of arty farty poseurs...

Ah Scott (shaking my head)

I have to admit I'm a big fan of FF. This is one of the best CDs I've bought all year! You've got to give it another chance. Trust me.

B&S are fantastic, but they're too established for the mercury, don't you think? Dear Catastrophe Waitress was brilliant, but not innovative, IMO. The Left Banke did all the innovation for B&S, back in the 60's... Don't get me wrong, as I do love them.

To use a term coined by Brian Eno, FF create a new "Musical Space" Now, on this criteria, perhaps others like the Streets should have won, I'll go that far, but not B&S!

As to Snow Patrol, I'm seeing them tonight! Can't wait! Their music is very listenable, but nothing new, really. All good stuff on the whole, I'll have to admit.

I just don't get it, I've heard Franz Ferdinand in a dozen different forms over the years - you can even hear echoes of stuff like The Divine Comedy and The Dandy Warhols - and many others. I guess it's partly image as well, I've been around the Glasgow 'art school' types for most of my adult life - most them could honestly do with a good kicking...

Just remind me so much of a mix of ABC and Orange Juice without sounding at all modern or relevant.

I'd probably rather listen to Keane. Although the best single I've heard recently is the new one from Duran Duran!

Well, Snow Patrol rocked last night. They're my wife's new favorite band. Sounded perfect.

I do see that Divine Comedy/FF connection... that flaming vocal sound is definitely similar. But the whole sound is new to me anyway.

There's probably a difference too as I'm hearing this with yankee ears, where anything from the UK right now sounds good.
