I've noticed on a few blogs recently that they're applying moderation to comments, more than once I've left comments only for them never to appear on the blog. This is a bit disappointing for me and I really feel it stifles the discussion concept for blogs. I far prefer the 'validated contributor' approach where a user has to prove their identity though an email link - whilst not perfect, this does seem to be the best solution to me. Any opionions on this?

Perhaps it will be better that when the blog owner"unmoderate" a comment, an email is sent to who has made the comment, so it can check and reply...
BTW... the worst part for me is the Web interface to moderate/unmoderate comments... :-)

What I had in mind was that when a comment is made, some sort of mail is sent to the person making the comment - this would also include the option to 'remember' the commenter using a cookie allowing future comments to be made without any further emails (I had the proliferation of emails). The advantage would be that there's validation of the users identity without interrupting the comment flow (for instance if I'm away from my browser I want comments but don't want to necessarily get invloved in the process).
